The Modern Art Museum
If there is one art museum to see when in Stockholm it is the Moderna. Hosting worthy exhibitions of modern + contemporary art year-round, and a permanent collection that includes work by Pablo Picasso, Henri Matisse, Dorothea Tanning, Andy Warhol + Niki de Saint Phalle – there is something for everyone. Currently on until February 19th is Georg Baselitz. Closed Mondays.
The Photography Museum
One of the highlights in the Stockholm museum circuit is Fotografiska. They have 4 major exhibitions a year of world renowned photographers usually always worth the visit to see. We recommend having lunch in their restaurant upstairs post-museum tour or grabbing coffee in the café overlooking Stockholm. They also offer photography courses, lectures + workshops, along with hosting concerts + artist talks on the regular.
A Prince’s Collection
This lovely mansion in Djurgården dates back to the early 1900’s when it was the home to Prince Eugen Waldemarsudde + his extensive art collection. A landscape painter himself, he actively collected art (mainly Swedish + landscape paintings) for over 60 years providing a large number of paintings + sculptures to be admired as you tour the house + gardens. For contemporary art in Stockholm this is one of the best places to go. Collecting international art that is relevant for our time, they have pieces spanning all medias + are a popular destination among the art community. Closed Monday – Wednesday.
Swedish + International Contemporary Art
Bonniers Konsthall is a must see for contemporary art admirers. They exhibit both emerging + established artists from Sweden + around the world. Make sure to stop by the gift shop for an affordable + unique souvenir. Closed Mondays + Tuesdays.
Bukowskis Market is an auction website that has the potential to become extremely addictive – finding vintage designer furniture, art, jewellery, etc. for prices where you feel like you are getting a deal is hard to find these days. Just a 15 minute drive from central Stockholm you can visit their warehouse + see the incredible collection of things for sale.
